“In a first conversation, you are evaluating the
applicant’s sense of enthusiasm and communication skills,” says
Linda Heep, human resources consultant with Credit Union Central of British
Columbia. Heep, who does nation-wide executive recruiting for many BC credit
unions, accepts interruptions and nervousness on unscheduled calls. Other
recruiters are less forgiving. They recall people who answer their cell phones
and carry on the conversation in a public place, making the interviewer worry
about their discretion. Employers tend to be a jealous lot, and interviewers
are piqued by those who have sent out so many resumes that they need to be
reminded where they’ve applied. "
