Reigning In The Flood
“Has the success of Brokeback Mountain been a greater boon to tourism in Wyoming or Alberta?”
Ang Lee’s wildly successful film about love and deception has turned the serene, secluded mountains where it was shot into a legit tourist destination. But even after snagging three Oscars and turning over the moneymaking reins to DVD sales in April, Brokeback Mountain continues to refuse giving up any easy answers. Calls have flooded travel centres in both Wyoming (where the film is set) and Calgary, Alberta (where it was shot) from travellers looking for the “real” Brokeback...
Director of Communications Don Boynton feels both areas have a right to market the landscape. “Wyoming is leveraging [the fact] that the movie was inspired there, and Travel Alberta is leveraging the fact that the director chose Alberta to film for its pristine wilderness and Canadian Rocky Mountains,” he says.
